Undergraduate Researcher

 

Redeat Wattero is a dedicated junior at the University of Minnesota, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Physiology with a minor in Neuroscience. Her academic journey is geared towards a pre-medical track, demonstrating her strong commitment to a future in medicine. 

Currently, Redeat holds the role of Undergraduate Research Assistant within the Neurobiology of Emotion, Sleep, and Trauma (NEST) laboratory, in the Physical Therapy Division of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. This position speaks to her passion for scientific research, particularly in the field of women's health, and she focuses on the cardiovascular health of women who have experienced trauma. Specifically, Redeat's research endeavors involve investigating the connection between sleep disturbances and cardiovascular biomarkers in premenopausal women. Her work in the NEST lab reflects her dedication to making a meaningful contribution to the field of healthcare, with a focus on improving the well-being of women. During the past summer, Redeat participated in the American Physiological Society Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program, where she had the privilege of working under the guidance of Dr. Ida Fonkoua within the NEST lab. This experience undoubtedly provided her with valuable insights and hands-on experience in the realm of physiological research, further solidifying her aspirations within the medical field. 

Upon completing her Bachelor of Arts degree, Redeat aspires to pursue a medical career, driven by her desire to make a positive impact on healthcare. Her chosen path is a testament to her dedication to addressing important issues in women's health and cardiovascular care, particularly for those who have experienced trauma. In addition to her academic and research pursuits, Redeat actively contributes to her community as an administrative intern for the non-profit organization known as Yen Foundation. In this role, she addresses resource and financial challenges faced by health initiatives in her hometown of Ethiopia, demonstrating her commitment to making healthcare more accessible and equitable in underserved communities.  

Outside of her academic and research pursuits, Redeat enjoys staying active by playing basketball and volleyball. She also values spending quality time with her friends and family, fostering meaningful relationships in her life. Additionally, she takes pride in representing her Ethiopian heritage through dance, embracing and celebrating her cultural roots.
